Books and Brews Sets Record Fundraising for Worthington Libraries

Annual Friends and Foundation event raises nearly $12,000 through silent auction, ticket sales, and community donations

The Friends Foundation of Worthington Libraries' annual Books and Brews fundraiser appears set to be the most successful in the event's history, with preliminary numbers showing nearly $12,000 raised for library programs and services.

Record-Breaking Numbers

Becky Princehorn, reporting on behalf of the Friends Foundation at the November 18 Board of Trustees meeting, shared the exciting preliminary results:

  • Silent Auction: Nearly $4,000 raised, with 36 of 37 donated items finding new homes
  • Ticket Sales: Just shy of $8,000
  • Sponsorships: Increased from previous years

"I think we're going to make the most we've ever made," Princehorn told the board.

Surprise Generosity from "Six of One"

One highlight of this year's event was an unexpected $2,000 contribution in gift cards from a group called "Six of One"—six Department of Defense colleagues who each designate a charity to support. One member, a Worthington resident, chose the library as his charity.

"He showed up at my doorstep with $2,000 worth of gift cards," Princehorn recounted. The gift cards were among the popular silent auction items.

Friends Foundation in Strong Financial Position

Beyond Books and Brews, the Friends and Foundation remains financially healthy. Key updates include:

Library Support: The Friends approved $91,000 (net of carryover) to support library programs in the coming year.

Book Sales: Sales continue to average $3,000 to $3,500 per event. Improved shelving in the book room has made sales safer and more accessible, particularly for older volunteers.

Membership: Steady numbers, with an active membership committee led by Janine Lincoln Hooker bringing fresh ideas. Princehorn noted that membership provides a very stable revenue source.

PAC Contribution: The Friends approved 5% of their gross annual revenue for the library's Political Action Committee.

New Board Member: The Friends welcomed Melissa Davis, a longtime book sale volunteer who previously served as president of the Friends of the Miami-Dade Public Library. "I think she'll bring us some fresh ideas," Princehorn said.

Pizza Partnership with The Hills Market

The Friends also partnered with The Hills Market for a pizza fundraiser, raising about $100. Board member Emma Mulvaney and her family were among the customers. While modest in fundraising impact, Princehorn noted the event builds community relationships. The Friends plan to schedule it earlier in the outdoor season next year for better weather.

2026 Book Sale Dates Set

With help from Lisa Fuller, the Friends have already set major book sale dates for 2026. The regular book sales continue to be a reliable revenue source for library support.

City of Worthington Community Fair

The Friends also participated in the expanded City of Worthington Community Fair in late October. Previously limited to the Leadership Worthington class, the event was opened to the public this year and drew significant foot traffic. Princehorn noted she received many positive comments about the library and plans to bring Books and Brews promotional materials next year.
