Hello Worthington! Here's your recap of September 16th's Worthington Libraries Board of Trustees meeting.
Library Services Adapting to Community Needs
Library Director Lauren Robinson presented usage trends showing digital circulation up 34% over last year, while physical browsing continues to decline. The library will focus on understanding these patterns in 2026. Robinson also reported that the library's $3-per-day free printing policy has reached a sustainable balance, with patrons understanding the system and volumes leveling off after initial declines.
The pop-up library program was a major summer success, reaching 653 people across 13 community events. Passport services continue to expand, with the library exploring evening hours and potential expansion to Northwest and Worthington Park locations, pending State Department approval.
In Other Library News
Financial Update: Fiscal Officer Jeremy Stevens reported strong investment performance, with year-to-date interest income exceeding $550,000 against a $500,000 annual projection. The Public Library Fund (PLF) will continue to fluctuate monthly under the new state funding formula, though not drastically. The board approved the required annual tax rate resolution for 2026.
2026 Building Projects: The Planning and Library Services Committee reviewed prioritized facility needs totaling approximately $700,000 across all three buildings. Old Worthington Library requires the most work, including generator replacement, sidewalk repairs, and gutter replacement. Northwest needs a new boiler and cooling tower system. Worthington Park will receive a building automation system to better monitor HVAC performance. Design planning will also begin for longer-term building improvements.
Friends Foundation: The Friends of Worthington Libraries reported a successful August book sale bringing in nearly $3,500. The annual Books and Brews fundraiser is scheduled for November 14. The group will review a request for $91,000 in library programming support for 2026 at their upcoming meeting, offset by remaining 2025 funds.
Trustee Recruitment: Nine applications have been received for the open trustee position, with interviews scheduled for October. A recommendation will be made to the school board by the November board meeting (The library's board of Trustees are appointed by the Worthington Board of Education).
Staff Recognition: The board honored Ulrike Xanthakis for 25 years of exemplary service as a circulation aide. Colleagues described her as "parentally kind and tirelessly dedicated" with an "unflappable demeanor and positive attitude."
