Library Ends 2025 Under Budget with Strong Investment Returns

Worthington Libraries closed out 2025 in solid financial shape, spending just over 80% of its budgeted appropriations for the year. Chief Financial Officer Jeremie Stevens reported that December brought an exceptional $109,000 in investment income—the highest monthly return of 2025—helping boost the library's year-end position.

Most of the unspent funds came from contingency reserves set aside for capital equipment emergencies that fortunately weren't needed.

Summer Reading Gets a Refresh, Heritage Months Coming in 2026

The library is planning notable changes to two key programming areas this year. Staff spent dedicated time reimagining the Summer Reading Program, moving away from book giveaways as early prizes toward items that encourage patrons to browse library shelves and check out materials.

The library is also launching Heritage Month celebrations with a thoughtful, structured approach. New School Board Liaison Jennifer Best offered to share a planning framework from her experience at COSI to help guide the effort.

New Board Leadership: The board elected new officers for 2026: Abigail Poklar as President, Elizabeth Grieser as Vice President, and Dr. Joseph Saverimuttu as Secretary. Trustee Emma Mulvaney was also sworn in for a full term through 2029.

Winter Reading Challenge: The library is launching a Winter Reading Challenge to encourage browsing. Patrons who check out five items found on library shelves can enter to win prize baskets.

Audit Recognition: The library received the Auditor of State's Award with Distinction for its 2024 audit, along with a certificate for open and transparent government. State auditors will present the awards at the February board meeting.

Drive-Up Window Popular: In response to a question from the new school board liaison, staff confirmed the Northwest Library drive-up window is well-utilized, especially on days with inclement weather. Staff even give dog treats to canine visitors.
